Radioactive particles that get into a biological system act just like a burning ember shooting out of the campfire or fireplace onto the carpet or nylon jacket.  The ember burns a hole in it until it goes out.

A radiation particle continues to burn the tissue forever because it may be thousands of years before it “goes out”!
